I regularly get mocked about my love for bleu cheese. I usually take it with grace and good humor, after all...I'm eating mold right? Well after today's yummy salad topped with bleu cheese dressing and garnished with catcalls and mocking from my family, I decided to do a little research. What I found...did NOT help my cause. I fear I will only be fueling the fire, but here goes: (Facts taken from Wikipedia...and we all know how reliable that is.)
- The characteristic flavor of blue cheeses tends to be sharp and a bit salty. (Not bad.)
- Blue cheeses are typically aged in a temperature-controlled environment such as a cave. (ooh caves...now doesn't that sound adventurous?)
- The smell of this food is widely considered to be pungent, even smelling like feet. (Hmmm crumbled stinky feet on my salad...now we are in for trouble)
- Blue cheese (or bleu cheese) is a general classification of cow's milk, sheep's milk, or goat's milk cheeses that have had Penicillium cultures added. (Does this mean if I am allergic to penicillin I shouldn't eat it? Sounding dangerous!)
Alright...I may have to hold my nose...(and plug my ears.) But I'm not giving up this:

LONG LIVE BLEU CHEESE---AND THOSE WHO EAT IT!

Okay, I have a bleu cheese story for you. One year my grandparents had a very nice family reunion at a resort. The whole family was there, including many out-of-towners. My grandmother had arranged a catered dinner for the whole clan.
As we started eating our lasagna dinner, we noticed it tasted and smelled funny. Something wasn't quite right. How in the world did bleu cheese end up in the dish I'll never know. But, the dinner was ruined but the story lives on and makes us laugh.
I think it odd that the first time I ever tried bleu cheese was in the elementary school lunch line. They always had bleu cheese dressing.
Wonder if that is still true.
Hmmm blue cheese in Lasagna? Strange...I'm guessing you are not a fan. :)
I remember it in elementary school too. Must have been before the advent of Ranch.
Eaters of blue cheese are very brave; I like feta, gorgonzola, goat cheese, etc. but I just can't seem to eat blue cheese - perhaps it's the color? the stigma attached to it? who knows - but I know I'm not eating it!
It is a subject we agree to disagree on. Like the Mayo/Miracle Whip argument.
Because you know I'm right. :D
you are right, katherine. i also did not know you like bleu cheese. i'm a fan ... didn't used to be until i worked at lone star and their bleu cheese dressing is fabulous! other bc dressings i don't love, but i do love a crumble of the cheese itself on anything (burgers, salads, etc.). just had an incredible salad with bleu cheese last week. i should give you the recipe. mmmm ... my mouth is watering. i need to stop commenting because i have bread to make. but i hope to get caught up on your blog soon.
