“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
~John Adams~
*Note: John Adams wrote this in a letter to his wife Abigail after the vote in the continental congress for independence on July 2. The date, that was formalized and recognized early on in the country, as Independence day was July 4th.

Ah, I love John and Abigail. If you haven't seen the HBO series on them (now on DVD), it is well done and wonderful. Who knew that HBO could produce something other than sheer garbage?
What a great quote, thanks for passing it on. We did have an excellent 4th, but I just wish some of the neighbors had quit celebrating before the 5th started. :)
Brenda, I DO want to see that. I love Abigail, I can't wait to meet her someday. :) I'll have to check if our library has them.
Marni, I heard fireworks still going on at 2:00 am this morning. :)
Kat: I think we rented from Blockbuster if the library doesn't have them. I think there are 3 in the series.
Great quote - I just wish more people (including myself), would really remember why we celebrate July 4th. I get the feeling from people that it's just another holiday to celebrate, but they're just not sure why they're celebrating.
God Bless America.
I've got the series Kathryn, you can borrow them from me. I thought you had them too.
Nope I don't have them. I'd love to borrow them Peggy.
