A Place for Everything and Everything In It's Place

This was my Grandma Thornley's motto. She told it to me, she showed it to me. She had a buffet cabinet where she kept her stamps and pens and office type stuff. It was immaculate. (Incidentally she had at least two kinds of stamps at all times because she would not send her bills out with 'fancy' stamps. Anyone requiring money (that was not a gift) only got flag stamps. Even at a young age I was impressed with her orderliness. It didn't wear off too much on me...(though my cousin Sharon definitely inherited that gene.) {jealous} ;) Anyway, it is her one line advice that occupies my mind now.

You see it's the New Year. If calendar's are correct I should have already set, broken and discarded at least 2 or 3 resolutions by this point. I don't do resolutions. But if I did I would definitely put these items on my list:
  1. Dusting
  2. Folding Laundry
  3. Sorting Mail
Because for sure I would break them.

I do however, like to improve. It's an annoying habit of mine...this need to improve. Annoying in that I don't do quite so quickly as I think I should. I think my problem is indecisiveness. After all it did take me 2+ years to decide on a paint color for my kitchen. 2 YEARS what is wrong with this picture it is JUST paint. On the other hand it is paint that with all the brushes and junk cost 200 buckaroos plus 3 full days to spread all over my huge kitchen canvas. {Maybe if I was rich I would believe in resolutions?}

So, in regular form, this thought of my Grandmothers has been percolating for a few months now and I have finally spilled the beans to my family that this was to be our new motto for the calendar year 2010. Which, of course, set my kids to teasing me about paint colors. You just can't win.

Granted I know I will never by my Grandmother, but come Jan. 1, 2011 I hope that we have at least a little less clutter, a few more book shelves, a couple of rubbermaid containers or in other words progress. I'm throwing my indecisionness aside, caution to the wind, junk to the dump.

And if that doesn't work, there's always Dusting.

I knew Grandma was "orderly", but I don't think I ever heard/ or remember her quote. I do remember the different kinds of stamps - and no - I don't have 2 sets :)

Ooh - I love containers, but dusting - it's way over rated. If our house gets dusted, it's because Ken did it.

Moving forced me to part with stuff. Except for an item or two, I don't miss anything I junked.

i'm working on that very same concept at my house. don't ask me how it's going. i hope you have better success. it's always good to have something we're trying to make better even if most days it just makes us cranky and annoyed.

hey Kat~
I've just been reading your blog (which I found through Charlotte Thornely) and see that you're Randal's sister! (did I do my math correct on that one?? LOL)

we were neighbors with the thornleys back in Nampa and in the same ward, etc... I consider Charlotte such a great friend!

anyway, after reading about you and viewing your 365 photo blog, I *think* I've seen you over on Clickin Moms! so as your blog post says - it IS a small world! LOL

and Ps: if you're not on CM - then I'd invite you to join us over (and it was still fun reading about you and your family!)

Oh my goodness too funny. Yes, Randal's sister. You were, I think, the first blog I checked out after joining Clickinmoms. I don't remember what the post was about, but I remember being very impressed with your photography (and thinking...hey she's near Randal and Charlotte. LOL)

Such a small small world...and welcome to my blog. :)

Too funny! I too am "trying" to declutter! Why is it so hard for me? I wish you luck on your endeavor, and wow, the world is getting smaller by the moment!

I really enjoyed reading that your Grandma would not send her bills out with fancy stamps. I think I might remember that forever.

I'm with Sharon, love containers...love them. I like things organized and if things aren't, I get in a bad mood.

One more thought.... what's the difference between a resolution and improvement? Just wondering....

It's a matter of semantics I guess Brenda, but for me resolution always means something you start then when you mess up you are done. Improvement means that I know it won't be a total switch over night, but more of a general direction.
